Trade labeling

RFID labeling in the retail market

The face of trading is changing – thanks to RFID

Transparency and product availability in storage compartments and store shelves, stocktaking at the push of a button, continuous traceability – and much more...

With RFID systems, a wide variety of processes can be efficiently automated in the wholesale and retail sectors – to the advantage of companies and their customers. This is possible due to the special advantages of RFID technology:

  • articles – either individually or as entire contents of cartons or pallets – can be identified in split seconds,
  • the transponders can be read from a distance of several meters – no direct visual contact is required,
  • the data volume of the electronic label fits onto one DIN A4 page whereas a barcode only provides 13 characters of information,
  • RFID-labeled products are unique – and particular data fields can be used flexibly in the transponder,
  • the electronic tags also function if the surface is dirty or iced over – and thus work equally as well in outdoor environments and in the cold store.

RFID: increasing expansion in the retail sector

It is no wonder that RFIDs are becoming increasingly established as the key technology of the retail trade. Retailers and manufacturers alike can use RFID technology to efficiently automate their incoming and outgoing goods, as well as their order picking processes and inventory management in the warehouse and store shelves.

Warehouse inventory and the flow of goods are transparent – and provide the basis for permanent goods availability and positive customer experiences. Inventories are possible at the touch of a button and thus extremely shortened – and, in the supply chain, an inventory overview, localization and tracing are possible at article level.

Optimized goods inventories and fewer floating assets, fewer losses and thefts – all of these are achieved with RFID. The technology can monitor best before dates or prioritize sensitive goods based on their urgency in the distribution process or incoming goods department.

Scanning the entire shopping cart without having to take out any of the goods and then being able to immediately find out and pay the total amount of the invoice – all this is made possible by RFID. And RFID delivers real-time data and analysis options on sales behavior, on the attractiveness of locations and product ranges, as well as other KPI’s, in the warehousing and retail business.
